During the period of studies have repeatedly pointed out medals: in 1853 he was awarded a small silver medal for the painting "Picket Guards Litovsky Regiment, in 1857 - a large silver medal for his painting" Temptation "(painting was bought by the author P. M. ; Tretyakov and became one of his first acquisitions in the collection), in 1859 - a small gold medal for the painting "Pawnbroker". In 1854-1855 he worked on paintings on the themes of the Crimean War, then turned to genre painting. In 1859-1860 twice participated in the contest for a big gold medal "for folk art scene, giving the right to a pensioner's trip abroad, but the rewards are not received. In 1861, for the painting "settlement with creditors" was awarded the title of academician of genre and battle-painting.

lived in St. Petersburg. He worked as a genre painter. Wrote custom portraits, scenes of hunting, copies of paintings by old masters. He turned to pastels. Created iconostasis of the church in the county Danilovskoye Yaroslavl province. Periodically, participated in exhibitions in the halls of IAH (1853-1873, with interruptions). In 1857 became a founding member of the Art Society in IAH. In 1863-1879 he was an active member of the St. Petersburg meeting of artists. In 1890 he worked on portraits of the royal family (Alexander III, Empress Maria Feodorovna, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, and others).

Schilder belongs to the so-called "minor" genre painter 1860. In his work has been influenced by GP Fedotov. Artist's paintings, mostly devoted to the fate of the "little man", is inherent in critical areas, a few straightforward, demonstrative, and the development of the plot. In the later period (1880 - 1890) created portraits in an academic manner. Painting style differs polished, but some schematic receptions, restrained color and careful study of details.

Schilder works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museum d'Orsay in Paris and others.
