From an old noble family of Russified Baltic Germans; Baron. He graduated from the page corps (1863) and the General staff Academy (1870) in St. Petersburg. Participated in the Russo-турецкой (1877-1878) and the Russo-японской war (1904-1905). Colonel (1872), General-майор (1881), General-лейтенант (1892), General of cavalry (1901). The chief of the Tver cavalry cadet school (1875), the Nikolaev cavalry school (1881). In 1894-1898 consisted in the Main headquarters. From 1899 командир XVII army corps.

Awarded the order of St. Alexander Nevsky, St. Vladimir 2-й, 3@and 4 ndashй-й degree, St .. Anna 1-й and 2-й degrees; full cavalier of the order of Saint Stanislaus.

formal artistic education is not received; artist-любитель. He drew a series of sketches and watercolors during the Russo@Russo and ndashтурецкой-японской wars. Created landscapes, portraits, battle and genre scenes; worked a lot in watercolors. The author of the watercolors: "Leib-казак", "Leib-казаки on Duderhof", "trumpeter of the hussars", "Dragoon Outpost on the river Lom", "Dragoons on the river Lom", "House М. Ю. Лермонтова in Pyatigorsk"; the album of drawings "Enlightenment of Russia" (St. Petersburg, 1894) and others. The work was published in magazines "Niva", "world illustration", the newspaper "New era".

have Created sketches of monuments (sculptor И. Н. Шредер): the traveler Н. М. Пржевальскому (1892, Leningrad; 1894 — on the banks of lake Forehead-Нор near Karakol), Admiral В. А. Корнилову (1894, Moscow), Admiral П. С. Нахимову (1989, Moscow), Russian engineers and General Э. И. Тотлебену (1904, Moscow), А. С. Келину (1909, Poltava).

With 1880 he took part in exhibitions. Exhibited at the exhibitions of the Society of exhibitions of works of art (1880, 1882), Society of Russian watercolorists (1885-1901, with interruptions), the Society of arts (1886).

Organizer of the first Museum М. Ю. Лермонтова in Nicholas cavalry school, where the poet studied at the school of cadets (1880). Participated in the activities of the Commission for the installation of the monument to Alexander III in Moscow.

he was Buried at Novodevichy cemetery in St. Petersburg (the tomb not preserved).
