Terebenev - one of the most important portrait painters of the first half of the XIX century, is best known as a master of miniature and watercolor portraits. In the works followed the tradition of this genre. Typically, the artist chose the bust or depiction (in children's portraits - in the growth or generation), present models of simple monosyllabic background, perform light shading, paid great attention to the transfer of details of costume and accessories (badges, jewelry), often inscribing track an oval or square shape. Most of them are of the type of chamber and poluparadnogo portrait, in which the artist sought not only to the disclosure of social status, but also spiritual qualities, the internal world models.

In early work (late 1810's - 1820's) worked primarily as a miniaturist. Was influenced by romanticism. In mid-1820's turned to watercolor portrait, initially using the more familiar miniature than watercolor technique. Most of his works of this period, performed on brown paper, black pencil in combination with watercolor, mixed with whiting and gouache. The density of color, an almost complete lack of transparency, a certain monotony of composite solutions (bust, pryamolichno), give them a "wooden" rigidity and flatness. Later, the artist overcame this constraint in the use of the rich specificity of watercolors, his works 1830 - 1840 have a "live" expressiveness, and in some cases differ virtuoso performance.

Terebenev works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, State Hermitage, the Pushkin Museum im. Pushkin and others.
