Biographical details are scarce and contradictory. The son of (?) surgeon, Privat-доцента Military-Медицинской Academy; brother Nikolay Moiseevich (Maximovitch) of Vaukavysk — famous journalist of the Berlin newspaper "Today".

spent his Youth in St. Petersburg. He studied at the "Gymnasium and real school" Я. Г. Гуревича in St. Petersburg (graduated in 1901), then — at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University (didn't graduate).

Went to Geneva, where he studied Philology, became interested in socialist ideas. In 1903 вернулся in Russia, served as a volunteer in the 17-м Volynsky regiment of Dragoons and was trained in Yelizavetgrad cavalry cadet school. In December 1903 he entered the law faculty of Yuryev University in 1908 graduated with diploma 1-й degree and was left at the Department of state law. May was a volunteer of the architectural Department of the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts in St. Petersburg (second half of 1900-х — the first half of 1910-х), where he studied under the guidance Л. Н. Бенуа.

In 1909 settled in Paris; left the law and decided to devote himself to art. Studied sculpture at the National school of fine arts at Ж.-А. Энжалбера and private academies. In 1912 he exhibited at the salon of the National society of fine arts and Autumn salon.

At the beginning of the First world war he returned to Russia. Enrolled a volunteer in the 15-й Pereyaslavl Dragoon regiment, which went through the war; was three times awarded the order of St .. George.
