From the family of the employee. Studied in Vienna: in the Studio Д. Кона (1905), school of drawing and painting (1906-1909), the Academy of fine arts (1909). In 1910-е was painted for magazines such as Vienna, Berlin, Krakow, Warsaw. In 1914 he participated in the revolutionary movement in Poland, was arrested.

In 1916-1930 lived in Petrograd (Leningrad) 1931 — in Moscow. In 1919 a volunteer joined the ranks of red Army, participant in the defense of Petrograd.

Poster artist, cartoonist. The organizer of the first Soviet satirical magazine — "Red devil" (1918-1919). In 1919-1921 he worked in "Windows of GROWTH". Drew cartoons for the newspaper Pravda (since 1917); collaborated with the magazines Mukhomor (1922-1923), "Behemoth" (1924-1928), "Smeac" (1924-1928). From 1931 — permanent employee of the magazine "Crocodile". The author of cartoons: "live — and learn!" (1926), "man in the Street" (1937), "American everyday life" (1938), "Sold into slavery" (1942), "Millionaires and the millions" (1947), "In Western Europe without changes" (1948), "Americans at the German bar", "translated by “Голос of America”" (both — 1954).

worked a Lot in book graphic art; collaborated in publishing "fiction", Goslitizdat, Military publishing house. Created illustrations for books: "Violent rogue" И. Ломакина (1928, not published), "Germany. The winter's tale" Г. Гейне (1935-1939, published in 1971), Canterbury tales Д. Чосера (1939-1943, not published), "the Prodigal son" Г. Реглера (1938), "the Grapes of wrath" Д. Стейнбека (1940), "the Case of Mrs. Luna" by G. de Maupassant (1945), "the Case of the parrot" К. Чапека (1945), "the lion on the square" И. Г. Эренбурга (1949, not published), the "Port-Артур" А. Н. Степанова (1940-е, not published), "Titan" Т. Драйзера (1954, not issued), "Bums and beggars" М. Д. Бенавидеса (not published).

Participated in the group exhibition "L on Armenia" ("Spider") in Paris (1925). 1930 –were exhibited in the Soviet Union (1-я citywide exhibition of fine arts in Leningrad). Participated in exhibitions: "Caricature in the service of socialist construction" (1932), "Artists of the RSFSR for XV years" (1933), the Moscow masters of the Soviet satire (1937), all-Union art exhibitions (1939 — "industry of socialism", 1949, 1952, 1954), drawing illustrations and poster (25-й anniversary of the red army, 1940), caricatures of artists of Moscow (1941), "the works of Moscow artists during the great Patriotic war" (1942), The "great Patriotic war" (1943), "the Struggle for peace against the warmongers" (1950) in Moscow; prints, watercolors and drawings by Soviet artists in Warsaw (1946) and others. Held a personal exhibition in Moscow (1944).

he studied at the VHUTEIN in Leningrad (1928-1930). Honored art worker of the RSFSR (1945).

the Memorial exhibitions were held in Moscow and Leningrad (1956).

Work is represented in major Museum collections, among them the State Tretyakov gallery, State Russian Museum, the Pushkin Museum im. А. С. Пушкина and others.
