in 1847-1858 (with breaks) as an auditor attended the IAH in class battle-painting at BP Villevalde. For student work was repeatedly awarded with medals: in 1851 - a small silver "for the image of war scenes," in 1852 - a large silver for the painting "The Cossacks at the well" in 1853 - a small gold for the painting "The Cossacks, rescuing the French convoy in Campaign 1812 ».
Also in 1853 was sent to the headquarters of the Russian army on the Danube front of the Crimean War 1853-1856. Was with the Russian army in the Crimea, was a direct witness of the defense of Sevastopol. One of the few artists who reflected the Crimean campaign in his works. In 1856 he was awarded the medal "For Defense of Sevastopol". Some full-scale sketches of the artist published in 1854-1858 in the journal "Russian gold leaf" VF Timm.
in 1858 for his film "The military road between Sevastopol and Simferopol in the Crimean War, was awarded a gold medal IAH, was promoted to the class artist of degree 1 and the right to a pensioner's trip abroad for a period of five years.
In 1859-1864 - retired IAH. Lived at first in Warsaw (1859), where he worked on battle compositions commissioned by the viceroy of the Kingdom of Poland, then in Rome (1860-1862) and Paris (1862-1864). Created a number of genre paintings, sketches and watercolors.
In 1864 traveled to the Caucasus for "art classes" in the Caucasian viceroy. In 1865, for the painting "The flight of the Bulgarians from the Danube after the retreat of Russian troops from the Silistra" was awarded the title of academician.
After the pensioner's life he lived alternately in St. Petersburg and Yalta. Participated in exhibitions in the halls of IAH (1851-1864), Society for the Encouragement of Artists (1864), the World Exhibition in London (1872).
In 1877-1878 during the Russian-Turkish war was a war artist of the Transcaucasian Front and special correspondent for the magazine "Niva».
Filippov - one of the greatest masters of painting of the battle in Russia in the middle of the XIX century, the representative of academic art. Was largely multi-figured compositions, distinguished by strict but somewhat schematic construction and restrained coloring. He proved himself as a superb draftsman, who was able to make in their work a genuine excitement and watercolor, often seeking a more expressive watercolor technique of color, rather than in the works of oil.
Filippova works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg and others.
