Born the son of renowned painter, academician of historical painting (from 1893) Claudia Petrovitch Stepanov.

artistic education in Italy. In 1913-1919 worked as a medalist at the St. Petersburg mint. Author of the first Soviet medals, issued editions of the Mint, on a two-year anniversary of the October Revolution. In 1919-1924 he was the deputy chairman of the Division of Museums in St. Petersburg.

In 1925 the Commissariat of Education sent to Paris and Rome to the mint to familiarize themselves with copying and engraving equipment, was engaged in manufacturing tools for seals on the metric system. In the Soviet Union did not return. For some time he lived in Paris, then settled in Italy. Engaged in scenography. Participated in the International Art Exhibition in Venice (Biennale). He gave private lessons, including the son of FIShalyapin Boris Fedorovich.
