Adolescence spent in Rybinsk, where he lived from 1920. He studied at the art Studio-Пролеткульта in Rybinsk (1920-1923) М. М. Щеглова, VKhUTEMAS — Vhuteine (1923-1929) in Moscow Н. Н. Купреянова, П. В. Митурича, П. И. Львова. In Rybinsk worked agiloforscrum steamships, trains, festive decoration of streets and squares.

From 1924 he worked in cooperation with М. В. Куприяновым and П. Н. Крыловым under the pseudonym of "Kukryniksy". Was engaged in satirical graphics, political caricature, poster, book illustrations. Collaborated in the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda", "Literaturnaya Gazeta", "Pravda", "Krasnaya Zvezda", the magazines "Spotlight", "Crocodile", "Smeac", "Change"; in the great Patriotic war — in the "Windows TASS". Performed the illustrations for the works И. А. Ильфа and Е. П. Петрова, М. Е. Салтыкова-Щедрина, А. П. Чехова, А. М. Горького M. de Cervantes, М. А. Шолохова.

Individually worked in the field of easel painting and graphics; painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes. Visited Italy.

From 1926 — participant of exhibitions ("the First graphic art exhibition" in Moscow). He exposed his works at exhibitions: Ukrainian book graphic art in Kharkov (1929), "Artists of the RSFSR for XV years" in Leningrad and Moscow (1932-1934) and others.

For his activity was awarded the title of member of the Academy of arts of the USSR (1947), people's artist of the USSR (1958), Hero of Socialist labor (1971).

he was Buried at Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.

Sokolova Works are in many Museum collections, including the State Tretyakov gallery, the State Russian Museum and others.
