the Son of the painter and architect Nicholas Leontyevich Benois, the brother of painters albert and Alexander Benois; uncle of the architect Julius Yulievich Benoit, artist Eugene Lanceray. He studied at the architecture Department of the Imperial Academy of arts (1875-1879) А. И. Резанова, Д. И. Гримма, А. И. Кракау; during the years of study was awarded a small (1877) and (1878) silver medals. In 1879 a program for "nursing home 1000 человек" was awarded a large gold medal.

Lived in St. Petersburg (Petrograd, Leningrad) and Peterhof. The representative of historicism in architecture (neoclassical, neo-Byzantine style). Completed projects: the Court singing chapel (1885-1889), Imperial clinical midwifery-гинекологического Institute (1897-1904; clinic Д. О. Отта), Grand Ducal burial chapel at the Peter and Paul fortress (1897-1908, together with Д. И. Гриммом, А. И. Томишко), the printing house "Pechatny Dvor" (1908-1910), Catholic Church of our lady of Lourdes (1909, together with М. М. Перетятковичем), the exhibition building (1914-1916; "the Benois wing", together with С. О. Овсянниковым) in St. Petersburg; St. George Church in Goose-Хрустальном (1892-1901), the Russian chapel in Darmstadt (1897-1899), the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Warsaw (1894-1912, not preserved). Participated in the construction of many mansions and apartment houses in St. Petersburg: apartment houses В. А. Ратькова-Рожнова on Gorokhovaya street (1885-1886), mansion Е. Ц. Кавоса at the Big intersection of Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt and Bolshaya Monetnaya street (1896-1897), apartment houses on 3-й line of Vasilievsky island (1897-1899), apartment houses 1-го Russian insurance society at the junction of Bolshaya Pushkarskaya street and Kronverksky (1913-1914, together with Ю. Ю. Бенуа), apartment houses Л. Н. Бенуа at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 16-й line of Vasilievsky island (1913-1914) and others. Created the project apartment houses 1-го Russian insurance company in Moscow (1905-1906, together with А. И. Гунстом). Participated in the competition for the construction of the Church of Resurrection (Savior on spilled Blood). Engaged in artistic interior decoration. Together with sculptor П. П. Забелло he created a monument to the composer А. Н. Серову (1881, the Necropolis of artists Alexander Nevsky-Невской Lavra). In 1885 был awarded the title of academician, since 1893 — member of the Imperial Academy of arts.

was Engaged in easel graphics. He worked in watercolour and Sepia, lithography; created landscapes, genre compositions as follows: "the Trooper", "View of the new Racecourse at the station Lanskoy", "View of the village".

From 1892 — participant of exhibitions (architectural exhibition in the halls of the IAH at 1-м the Congress of Russian architects in St. Petersburg). Participated in exhibitions: the Society of Russian watercolorists (1892), architectural-художественной exhibition (1911) in St. Petersburg, Russia industrial and agricultural exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896). Member of-учредитель and honorary Chairman of the society of architects-художников (1903). The editor of the magazine "Architect" (1892-1895). In 1899 awarded the title of architect of the Imperial court. Full cavalier of the order of Saint Stanislaus; awarded the order of St .. Vladimir 3rd-й and 4-й degree, St .. Anna 1-й, 2@and 3 ndashй-й degrees.

he Taught at the Drawing school Society for the encouragement of arts (1879-1884), the Institute of civil engineers (1884-1892, from 1892 — Professor); the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts — of the State free art-учебных workshops — VKhUTEMAS — Vhuteine (1892-1927, from 1912 — rector, Professor-руководитель architectural Department of the higher art school); the Leningrad Institute of engineers of communal construction (LEICS, 1920-1927). Among the students: Н. Е. Лансере, Ф. И. Лидваль, О. Р. Мунц, В. А. Покровский, В. Г. Гельфрейх, Л. В. Руднев, И. А. Фомин, В. А. Щуко, А. В. Щусев. Honored art worker of the RSFSR (1927).

he was Buried at Volkov cemetery in St. Petersburg. A memorial exhibition was held in Leningrad — St.-Петербурге (1956, 2006).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them State Russian Museum, Science-исследовательский Museum of the Russian Academy of arts.
