Moscow Conceptualism in Frankfurt
Today, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt Exhibition «Total Education: Moscow Conceptualism 1960-1990».
Moscow Conceptualism (which is sometimes called the «romantic» conceptualists) - During the Soviet unofficial art. For the first time the term was mentioned in 1979 in the same article by Boris Groys in the journal «A-I». The author of this article, which, incidentally, was the curator of the exhibition in Frankfurt, defines the period as a «romantic, dreamy and psihologiziruyuschy version of the international conceptual art 60-70-ies». Artists of the Moscow conceptualism famous as the destroyer of Soviet realism, feel free to join in the creativity of the characteristics of not only the «classic» Western conceptualism 1960's and 1970's, but such currents as appropriatsionizm, performance art, pop art. Many Russian artists kontseptualistov considered to movement «Sots Art», representatives of which puts the item «sovkovoy» reality in provocative context. Texts, objects, paintings, installations and performances of participants in the movement are considered classics of contemporary Russian art community.
A number of Moscow conceptualism achieved fame in the West. Creation of such artists as Ilya Kabakov, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, Erik Bulatov familiar to many fans of modern art. But the Frankfurt Exhibition Organizers decided not to rely solely on the religious names and show the movement in its entirety, and to acquaint the audience with foreign artists, which abroad did not so popular as in Russia. In Schirn Kunsthalle will see 130 works of thirty artists, including such figures unofficial art, as Yuri Albert, Grisha Bruskin, Alexander Kosolapov, Boris Mikhailov, Pavel Peppershteyn, Victor Pivovarov, Dmitri Prigov, etc.
«Total Education» - the third major project Schirn Kunsthalle, on Russia. In 1992 there was exhibition «The Great Utopia», which exhibited works by artists of the first Russian avant-garde. In 2003, the exhibition center show the art Stalinist era. Moscow Conceptualism Exhibition will run until September 14, and then relocate to the Fundacion Juan March in Madrid, where she will be held from 10 October 2008 to January 11, 2009.
