Two masterpieces of Zinaida Serebryakova at Bonhams
Two panels Zinaida Zinaida Serebryakova from the cycle of monumental and decorative display at Russian auction Bonhams, which will be held May 30 in London, with a preliminary estimate 700-900 thousand pounds each.
work "Flora" and "Law" are part of a unique series of eight panels with allegorical figures. The panel was created specifically for Serebryakova Manuar estate owned by a Belgian baron Brower and located on the border of Belgium and France.
theme decorative panel has been selected by the Baron and reflect the interests and hobbies of the customer. His interest in classical art found its expression in talent Serebryakova depict nudity, while for Russian artists of the early XX century was a very unusual appeal to the subject of nudes.
All shapes, filled with Serebryakova have an allegorical meaning. The panel, entitled "Law" is associated with the profession of the customer, his love of nature displayed in the "Flora", the figure of "Light" is illustrated with a torch in his hand, represents the work of Baron industry, and "Art" - a girl reading a book with a palette and plaster cast of the feet - is the desire of the customer to patronize art.
finished work sent Serebryakov photo mural to his brother Eugene Lancer , who replied: ". So .. I liked them. Do you have exactly what there is around: in addition to fiction, what is called composition. They are good in its simplicity, performance, completeness of forms, so monumental and decorative addition to the plot and size. You're so well connected, integrally understand (in terms of the transfer) the form of objects. Samoyu folding seems to me, "Jurisprudence". This panel is particularly elegant and richly filled. In its simplicity, parsimony, so to speak, jewelry, attributes. I envy you that you were so simple, so flexible, well-finished and know how to transfer the body ».
Unfortunately, the Baron de Brouwer and his wife were killed during the Second World War, and the estate, which were the work of the artist, has long been considered destroyed. But Villa had survived, but the new owners were unaware that the panels decorating the house for 70 years, to be painted Serebryakova, because it was believed that they hold an unknown Flemish artist.
Director of the Russian department Sophie Hamilton commented: "For the auction house Bonhams is a great honor to present two rare and unusual work of outstanding artist Zinaida Serebryakova. The fact that these panels have long been considered lost, and exhibited in public only once, at the State Russian Museum, attract special attention of collectors and scholars of Serebyakovoy ».
