Babut studied at the Drawing School under the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (OPKh), the Higher Art Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the Imperial Academy of Arts (1899–1907), and at the I. E. Repin studio; in 1907 he was conferred the title of artist for the painting Holiday in Rus.

Babut lived in St. Petersburg. He painted landscapes, portraits, genre and allegorical compositions in the manner of salon academism; he also worked a lot in the technique of pastel. Since 1907 he was a member of the society Myussarovskie Ponedelniki (“Myussar’s Mondays”). In 1910s he served as a secretary and treasurer of the society.

Babut participated in the Spring exhibitions at the halls of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1903–1907), the Autumn exhibitions of paintings (1906–1912), exhibitions of St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Society of Artists (1910–1918, with interruptions) in Petersburg — Petrograd, exhibitions of the Northern Circle of Art Lovers in Vologda (1913) and others. The personal exhibition of the artist was held in Petrograd in 1916.
