From a peasant family. Studied at icon-painting workshop Д. П. Салаутина in Palekh. He worked as a painter and restorer at Art-иконописном partnership in Moscow (1903-1908). In 1909 открыл own icon-painting workshop in Moscow. In parallel, as a volunteer he was engaged in the Moscow archaeological Institute (graduated in 1910).

he Lived in Moscow. Restored paintings in the churches of Moscow, Zvenigorod, Vyazma. Participated in the restoration of the Annunciation Cathedral of the Chudov monastery in Moscow, the Nativity Cathedral of the Savvino-Сторожевского monastery in Zvenigorod.

After the October revolution participated in the eighth. With 1922 together with И. И. Голиковым started to paint items of papier-маше. He was one of the founders of the Palekh artel "Ancient painting" (1924); the representative of the Cooperative in Moscow. Engaged in lacquer miniature; executed painting of snuff-boxes, Puranic, cigarette cases, boxes for agricultural, domestic and fabulous theme: "Game of checkers" (1922; plate, together with И. И. Голиковым), "Village party" (1922; plate), "Heat-птица" (1925; case), "Peasant with a sheaf" (1925; case). Created a series of works for display at the agricultural exhibition in Moscow (1923).

the artist's Works were exhibited at the XIV international exhibition in Venice (1924), international exhibition art-декоративных arts in Paris (1925), the exhibition of the group "Association" in Moscow (1925), the world exhibition in new-Йорке (1939).

have Compiled a collection of drawings, photographs and copies of works of ancient art. The author of the book: "Materials for the history of Russian icon painting" (M., 1914, vol. 1).

In 1943 he was arrested; died in the Urals.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, the Russian Museum of decorative-прикладного and folk art, State Museum of Palekh art
