from a peasant family. Initial artistic skills acquired in the iconographic school of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (1910-1914). Attended school workshop AF Rerberg in Moscow (1913), School of Drawing Society for the Encouragement of Arts in Petrograd (1914-1918) studied under the direction of Nicholas Roerich and A. A . Rylova. In 1918-1919 he lived in Kiev, where he continued his education at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts.

In 1920, together with its companion SB Nikritin left Kiev. In Kharkov Nikritin and Red'ko met DP Shterenberg, who showed them drawings of the People's Commissar of Education Lunacharsky. He helped obtain the workshop (for two) in Moscow, as well as continuing education in the State of free art workshops - Higher Art (1920-1922), in the workshop of Kandinsky.
