Exhibition of works of well-known contemporary painter Marlene Dumas opens today at the New York Museum of Modern Art

Exhibition of world-recognized artist, born in South Africa, Marlene Dumas (Marlene Dumas) opens today in New York's Museum of Modern Art (Museum of Modern Art, MoMA). It's called Measuring Your Own Grave ( «Measuring their graves») and organized with the support of the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (Museum of Contemporary Art, MoCA).

The exhibition includes 70 paintings and 35 drawings, created over three decades, which gives visitors an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with the work of one of the most amazing and even scandalous authors of our time. Recently, her painting «visitor» was the most expensive work of living women artists , which was sold at Sotheby's for 6.3 million dollars.

Exhibition first mature work of Dumas, created in the late 1970's. The exhibition is organized chronologically, as well as systematized by groups that reflect the author's tendency to create a series. The main themes in the works of Marlene Dumas - the birth, life, sex, death, grief, and identity - reflected in the portraits and a variety of ways, very often a source of inspiration for the artist used photographs published in newspapers or magazines or taken by itself on the Polaroid. This picture never becomes literal retelling photographic «original». The artist rather focuses on the difference between photography and painting, her interests «Immortality» pictures torn from the original context and devoid of identifying information. The exhibition provides an opportunity to trace the development of these themes in the works of artists and learning from paintings and drawings of exceptional quality, including the technique.

Marlene Dumas was born in South Africa in 1953. In 1976, she moved to the Netherlands, where the lives and works so far. Her work is more known in Europe than in America. This is her fifth solo exhibition in New York and the first exhibition of this magnitude in the United States.

The exhibition will remain open until February 16, 2009.
