In 1753, an apprentice at the Drawing of the Academy of Sciences, where he studied under the guidance I.-E. Grimmel. In March 1758 transferred to the IAH, studied at GF Schmidt, then at the EP Chemesova (until 1764). In 1765 he was awarded the small and large silver medals for drawings from life, in 1766 was awarded a small gold medal for a portrait AA Matveeva (1766) on the original IM Rigaud. In December of that year declared "designated" in academics. Since 1767 - Head engraving class IAH (instead A.-H. Radiga), but due to illness, the duties had not begun. In 1770 Kolpakov was granted a pension from IAH.

Engaged engraving of reproduction; worked in the tool and etching techniques. Known works by master 11 (mainly training); the best of them - the portraits of the original I. Matveeva Rigaud (1766), "The Apotheosis of Catherine II» a drawing GI Kozlova (1762). Known colored prints of engravings.
