From the family of a merchant, who came from Germany;, a citizen of Bavaria. Graduated from high school at the Lutheran Church of St. Peter in St. Petersburg (1939). He studied at the philosophical faculty of the Berlin University (1839), in the construction of the Berlin school (1840) and of the Berlin Academy of arts (1840-1843).

In 1843 he returned to St. Petersburg; joined in the Studio of the architect Р. А. Желязевича. As volnoprihodyaschim student attended classes at the Imperial Academy of arts in St. Petersburg, in 1843 for the "project of the provincial houses" has received the title neklassnogo (free) artist. In 1846 for the "public baths" was awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of arts.

In 1849 began his independent architectural career. Was engaged in the rebuilding of private houses Р. В. Риттера, С. Р. Брандта, А. И. Томсен-Боннара, К. К. Задлера, apartment houses Р. Н. Геймбюргера the building of the Main society of Russian Railways (all @the end of the mdas 1840-х — beginning 1850-х), premises of the sugar factory of the merchant М. Е. Кара (1850-1856), Kalinkina brewery (1859, 1862-1863), Nevsky stearin and soap factories in St. Petersburg.

1851 — senior court architect of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna; conducted restoration work in the Palace of the Grand Duchess at Kamenny island, at her residence in Oranienbaum, in particular in the Chinese Palace. In 1851-1853 — senior architect and member of the Board 1-го district of the Ministry of communications, then — architect of the insurance company "Salamander".

Engaged in the completion of projects of a deceased architect Н. Е. Ефимова: the House of the Minister of state property on the corner of Bolshaya Morskaya street and St. Isaac's square, the building of City Council on Dumskaya street and the Voskresensky Novodevichy convent on Moskovsky prospect.

In 1858 for competitive projects of the town hall in Hamburg (1856, 2-я prize) and the Ministry of Military and Foreign Affairs in London (1858) awarded the title of Professor of the Imperial Academy of arts. One of the founders of St-Петербургского mug of architects (1862; 1870 — St.-Петербургское society of architects).

he also Worked in the field of easel graphics. Created in pencil and watercolor landscapes of St. Petersburg, European cities. The author of a series of views of St. Petersburg and Moscow, which were created as a gift to Queen Victoria by 10-летию her reign (1847).

he Taught at the Imperial Academy of arts and private architecture Studio; among his students — В. А. Шретер.

In 1861 went to Germany for treatment; in 1863 were finally settled in Gotha in Thuringia, served as a Senator on the construction part.

Worked in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Finland, Portugal. Regularly came to St. Petersburg. Created designs for the Opera theatre in Riga (1860-1863, was burned during the fire of 1882 года, partially preserved), a Private Bank in Gotha (1873-1877), the Finnish National Bank in Helsingfors (1876-1883); engaged in construction of private villas in Thuringia. Participated in many European architectural competitions, among them — establishment of Mineral water in Riga (1-я award, implemented in part), country club at revel (1-я prize), the Church of St. Torquato in Guimaraes (1-я prize), the Reichstag building in Berlin (1-я prize, not realized).

Honorary member of the Berlin Academy of arts. Author of articles on architecture, painting, sculpture. The last two years of his life from-за severe illness (paralysis) did not work.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — State Hermitage Museum, State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov gallery and others.
