Art education has received in early 1880 at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MUZHVZ). His teacher was the AK Savrasov.

At the same Kozlov began to participate in student exhibitions, as well as exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (MOLH): exhibited his works at 15, 16 and 17-second announcements.

artist collaborated with a number of magazines late XIX - early XX centuries: with "guslar", "Iskra", "Fatherland", "Rainbow", "native speech", "Family", "Tsar's bell "etc. His works were published there in reproductions and often went out in the form of postcards.

N. Kozlov wrote mostly inconspicuous landscapes, was an excellent draftsman, successor of the Russian realist tradition. He loved pastel colors. Mainly used the theme of his teacher Savrasov, in the manner which it is oriented. This is also the name of his paintings: "Village Corner", "Spring", "Rasputitsa", "leave the nest", "Landscape with a River", etc.
