born in the family of an official, the artist's father served in the Pskov Excise. He spent his childhood in Pskov, finished 7 classes of Pskov provincial gymnasium. In 1909 he joined the faculty of decorative painting at the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron Alexander Stieglitz in St. Petersburg. He is known in literary and artistic circle "Flat number 5, which met in the apartment curator of the Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1917, after graduating from the college participated in the design of Petrograd to the day of opening of the Constituent Assembly. He worked in the area of the poster.
