Original art education in Bezhetsky district school, where he studied under the guidance of his brother and a teacher of drawing and SG Morozov. In 1870, after graduating from training, he moved to St. Petersburg and was admitted to the IAH without examinations. In 1870 and 1871 was awarded two small silver medals in 1872 and 1873 - two large silver medals for drawings and sketches from nature. In 1876, for the painting "Capture of Samson" was awarded a small gold medal in 1877 for the program "The Marriage at Cana" released from the Academy with the title of class artist 1-st degree.

Since 1880 was a teacher of drawing at the Kronstadt Secondary School. Regularly participated in exhibitions of IAH and the Society for the Encouragement of Arts.
