born in the family caretaker at Kronstadt warehouses. Nobleman. In 1782-1797 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in the class of historical painting in GI Uvarov and I. Akimova. In 1794 for drawing from nature was awarded a small silver medal in 1797 - a large silver medal for the picturesque sketch from nature. In the same year completed program (graduation) now "Noah, on leaving the Ark to make a sacrifice to God", was awarded a small gold medal, received the certificate of the artist 1-degree (class artist). In June 1798 was appointed associate the class of historical painting in the IAH. In 1800, recognized as "designated" in academics. In 1801 he received the program in the title of academician. The artist should portray "the Apostle Andrew the moment when he is to be crucified, but now Shebuyev not fulfilled. In 1802 was an assistant professor in the class of historical painting.

In 1803 went to the pensioner's trip to Italy. Returned to St. Petersburg in 1807. In the same year for the sketch "Assumption of Mary into heaven" for the Kazan Cathedral was awarded the title of Academician, and was elected associate professor for the painting "The Battle of Poltava».

In 1812 promoted to professors of history painting. In 1815-1825 had a lot of orders, mostly worked on the creation of images for churches, including the chapel of the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1820-1823 created a ceiling of "The Resurrection of Christ" for the Church of the Resurrection of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo, was appointed court painter.

In 1821-1839 - director of Tapestry in St. Petersburg. Since 1830, served in the position of rector of the Academy of Fine Arts of Painting and Sculpture. From 1842 - Distinguished Rector IAH. Posted practical guide to human anatomy. From 1844 he worked on the creation of four murals in the St. Isaac's Cathedral ( "The Blessing of Children", "Resurrection of the Son of the Widow of Nain", "Christ in the house of Martha and Mary", "The Raising of Lazarus"), also in the artist's responsibility is to oversee the execution of the murals in Cathedral.
