From a noble family; the son of a diplomat, major of the Imperial guard. He received his artistic education in St. Petersburg and Paris, where he took private lessons with the painter and engraver Armand-Теофиля Cassana (1862).

he Lived in Kassel (until 1904), Bonn (1904-1905), Berlin (1905 to 1912), the city of Oberlahnstein (1912). Many traveled to Europe: Italy, Germany, Finland. Worked primarily as a landscape painter in the techniques of oil painting, watercolors, pastels. Painted views of the Tyrol, Normandy, Germany (in the vicinity of the spree river and the Rhine). Became famous by a series of views of German cities and fortresses on the Rhine, which have been widely published and was partially translated into engraving.

Exhibited at exhibitions of the Berlin Academy of arts (1876-1878), Art exhibition in Zurich (1885). A retrospective exhibition was held in the town of Lahnstein (2005).
