Biographical information about the artist scarce.

From 1838 he studied at the IAH in St. Petersburg as volnoprihodyaschego student. In 1841 he was awarded a small silver medal in 1842 - a large silver medal. In the same year was promoted neklassnogo (free), painter, in 1845 awarded the title of the class artist. In 1849, recognized as "designated" in academics. In 1853 elected an academician of perspective painting for the painting "Interior of the basilica of St. Peter's palace in Palermo" and "Exterior of the church of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow." Participated in academic exhibitions.

In 1856-1870 served as the architect of the War Ministry. In his project to build villas P. Chistyakov, and V. Derikera in Tsarskoe Selo, Nicholas military school building, mansion Veltsina, a number of tenement houses in St. Petersburg.

Kolb works are in several museum collections, including the State Hermitage Museum.
