From the family servants. Initial art education has received in Central Stroganov school of technical drawing (early 1900-х). He studied at Moscow school of painting at А. М. Васнецова, А. Е. Архипова, С. В. Малютина, Л. О. Пастернака, К. А. Коровина. In parallel with his studies as an assistant К. А. Коровина worked at the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow (1900-10-е).

he Lived in Moscow, in 1917-1922 — in Smolensk. Worked primarily as a landscape painter; created works on the theme of military-морского fleet. Worked on the poster. He directed the art Studio of Proletkult in Smolensk.

Participated in 3-й exhibition of paintings in Ryazan (1919), 2-й state exhibition of paintings in Smolensk (1921), the exhibition of paintings 22 художников (1927), the exhibition "Poster in the service of five" (1932) in Moscow, "public education of the USSR" in London (1932) and others. In 1959 held a solo exhibition in Smolensk.

For his activity was awarded the title people's artist of the USSR (1978). Member of-корреспондент of the USSR Academy of arts.

Works are in several Museum collections, including at the Smolensk state historical and architectural-художественном Museum-заповеднике.
