Art education in Munich. In the early 1800's, came to Russia, where his uncle, J.-S. engraver Klauber. He taught drawing in the Page and the cadet corps, as well as in school for the deaf. He gave private lessons. In 1833 received the title of "appointed" in academics. In 1839 elected as an academician IAH. In 1846 he worked in Italy.

worked primarily as a watercolorist and lithographer. Especially prized Coleman watercolors depicting "Russian type" and scenes of Russian life. I created lithographs for the album, published by A. Plouchard in 1820. He turned to engraving on copper.

Coleman works are in many museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, Pushkin Museum im. Pushkin and others.
