the Son of serf rights. Along with his father released. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1841-1861), first as volnoslushayuschego student in the class of historical painting in Ф. А. Бруни in 1856 переведен in class "of folk art scenes". In 1852, for the painting "Roman woman breastfeeding her father, condemned to starve to death" and "the deluge" was awarded small silver medals, in 1853 за painting "the Death of Ivan Susanin in the forest from the poles" received a large silver medal, in 1858 за picture "Obzhorny number in St. Petersburg" awarded a small gold medal. In 1860 за picture "the Interrupted betrothal" was awarded a gold medal М. Л.-Э. Виже-Лебрен "for the expression". In 1861 was going to compete for a gold medal for the painting "the hay square in St. Petersburg," but, abandoning of the competition, appealed to the Council of the Imperial Academy of arts with the request to allow to provide this same picture for the title of academician. Work on the tender was submitted, dropped out of the Academy with the title of class artist of 2-й degree.

Lived in St. Petersburg. He worked primarily as a genre painter, portraitist. Author paintings: "Demyanova ear" (1857), "a fire in the village" (1859), "In the cellar" (1963), "In the court" (1867), "self-Portrait" (1868), "the festivity on the Tsaritsyn meadow" (1869), "Duel of Pushkin" (1869), "Game of checkers" (1870), "Farewell to the territorial army, warrior".

he worked a Lot in the cartoon. From 1858 published cartoons in the album "Friends", published Н. А. Степановым. In 1859-1869 — permanent employee of the satirical magazine "Iskra" (performed under the alias "Wolf"), from 1871 — publisher-редактор magazine "Painter".

Performed a graphical parodies of works of modern literature: "Fathers and sons. Comical romance А. Волкова" (St. Petersburg, 1861), "Petersburg slums (В. В. Крестовскому). Caricature of a novel, highly condensed, fixed, and imaged in the faces А. М. Волковым and Co" (St. Petersburg, 1867), "the Court. A contemporary tale Н. А. Некрасова depicted in the cartoon А. М. Волковым" (St. Petersburg, 1868), "Smoke. Comical romance А. Волкова and Co, taken from live art-сатирического novel И. С. Тургенева" (St. Petersburg, 1869). Tried to do the lithography ("Peasant woman milking a cow", "Though sees an eye, Yes tooth itching to do so", both — 1861) and etching ("image Bust man Smoking a cigarette", 1870).

Exhibited at the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of arts (1853-1864, with breaks). Member of the Society for the encouragement of arts; Committee member St.-Петербургского collection of artists.

he Taught at the Drawing school of the Society for the encouragement of arts (since 1866); among students Н. А. Ярошенко.

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery, State Russian Museum, Russian Museum А. С. Пушкина realization of the project. А. С. Пушкина, Saratov state art Museum named after. А. Н. Радищева and others.
