Painter, graphic artist, art theorist

From large merchant families of Baltic Germans. Studied at Mitau in the Studio Ю. Деринга then the IAH — Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts in St. Petersburg (1889-1897) А. Д. Кившенко, В. К. Маковского, А. И. Куинджи. For student work was awarded two small (1891, 1893) and two large silver medals (1892, 1893). In 1894 for the painting "At the landing" received the title of class artist of 3-й degree. In 1897, for the painting "In the market (Market square in Jelgava)" — the title of class artist of 2-й degree.

Lived in Mitava (Jelgava), Dresden (1906-1917), Berlin (from 1917). In 1897-1898 visited Vienna, Paris, Northern Italy. He painted landscapes, genre compositions, still lifes and portraits. In different years, passed through passion impressionism, Fauvism, expressionism. Author of painting works, "the Spinners" (1896), "Peasant curly rope" (1898), "River ripple" (around 1898), "Spring landscape" (1899), "a Seamstress in a blue dress" (1899), "Evening" (1900), "the River of Miss spring" (about 1900), "the lamp" (1901), "At the window" (circa 1904), "At twilight" (circa 1904), "the Peasant girl" (about 1905), "Bathing boys" (1906), "the Fog" (1907), "the Orphan" (1907), "Inn", "String Quartet" (1910), "still life with primroses" (1913), "Flowers and leaves" (1925).

From 1896 — participated in exhibitions. A member of the circle of Latvian artists "Rukis" ("Worker") in St. Petersburg. Founder of the art group "1913". He exposed his works at exhibitions in the halls of the Imperial Academy of arts (1896-1900), "World of art" (1902) in St. Petersburg; secession in Berlin (1901, 1904), the world exhibition in Rome (1911). His personal exhibitions were held in Riga (1901/1902), his workshop in Jelgava (1899, 1902, 1904), Dresden (1906; Art salon Э. Рихтера).

he Taught in his own Studio in Berlin (1917-1932).

Personal exhibition of works (posthumous) were held in Berlin and Dresden (1933), Riga (1939, 1949, 1969).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — Latvian art Museum in Riga, Jelgava history and-художественный Museum. Г. Элиаса national gallery of Berlin, an Art Museum in malmö, and others.
