The Tretyakov gallery has previously addressed the theme of the city: "Moscow in Russian and Soviet painting" (1980), "Moscow and Muscovites" (1997), "Catherine the Great and Moscow" (1997), "Peter the Great and Moscow" (1998), "Elizabeth Petrovna and Moscow" (2010). The image of the city always attracts and inspires artists. Modern curators, it is interesting to introduce it to a new generation of Muscovites. This year's exhibition is distinguished by the fact that they are composed almost wholly based on works from the collection of the Tretyakov gallery.

In the exhibition "Moscow through the ages" considerable attention is paid to the formation of the iconography of the city – from the looks of the pre-fire Moscow's icon painting of the XVII century and the first landscape of the capital in the works of F. Alexeyev to search for "formulas of Moscow" artists of the early twentieth century and display the image of the city of new shapes and materials of the modern masters. The exhibition consists of five thematic sections: "Moscow – the third Rome", "Moscow Kremlin – the heart of the city", "Talk about old Moscow, Red square. "The formula of Moscow"" and "the twentieth century. The voices of the city". Visitors will meet with well-known works of Simon Ushakov, V. Surikov, Boris Kustodiev, A. Lentulov, V. Many of the paintings have not been exhibited before, for example, "Pushkinskaya Ploschad" M. Gurevich, written in 1937, when the monument to A. S. Lentulov "Moscow" (1913), executed in mixed mediathe technique can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the New Tretyakov gallery, but it too was difficult restoration work, after which significantly transformed.

One of the features of the exhibition is the opportunity to hear "voices of the city": work on the exposition was attracted by the Institute's sound design, which is the largest Russian archive of sounds. Together with specialists in various fields was created audio installations, "voicing" the main works of the exhibition and allowing you to take in the sights of Moscow from different eras. So, for scoring "Moscow courtyard" (1878) ornithologists helped to pick up the voices of birds that lived in 1878 in the area of the side-streets of Arbat – this part of the city depicted in the painting by V. Polenov. It looked like the Spasopeskovsky lane about 150 years ago. It was announced just eight works, among which are: "Cathedral square in the Moscow Kremlin" (early nineteenth century) F.
