Visions of Sid Barrett

Following his departure from the group Pink Floyd Legendary musician Sid Barrett turned to painting. The exhibition opens in Cambridge, where Barrett fans can see the first picture

Sid Barrett (Syd Barrett) has long been settled in the list of the major icons of rock 'n' roll. In the 1960's, he became a founding member of legendary group Pink Floyd, and was attributed to an elected community fathers psychedelic rock. Alas, Barrett short glittering on the music scene: in 1968, because of addiction to LSD and, according to the news because of mental illness, he left the group. Barrett released several solo recordings and in 1981 returned to his home town of Cambridge, where the hermit lived more than 25 years. At Cambridge he began again to call themselves by the name given at birth - Roger, and also engaged in painting.

In childhood Barrett drew very well. His younger sister, Rosemary Breen (Rosemary Breen) told in an interview: «I think that people first realized that there is something special, when they saw his children's pictures. He did pencil drawings, which were quite exceptional, he had a talent for drawings from nature ». After school Barrett entered the London College of Arts Kemberuell, among which are the graduates of such artists as artists Howard Hodgkin (Howard Hodgkin) and R. China (R. B. Kitaj) and director Mike Lee (Mike Leigh). But he abandon painting, when I began to sing, compose music and play guitar.

According to Rosemary Breen, Barrett «always considered himself more an artist than a musician. For him, music has always been a complement to the fine arts, and for that matter, the music prevented him from a more obvious career path. Music for him was fun, and art - this love. Music came to the fore because of Pink Floyd, but if not, he continued to do art, and I think that [either artist. - Ed. ], life brought him much more satisfaction ».

From October 22 to November 1 in Cambridge will host an exhibition which will see more than 30 paintings by Sid Barrett. All of them never before exhibited. The exhibition is organized in a series of activities of The City Wakes, dedicated to the memory of Barrett. Musician wrote a lot of pictures, but not all of them survived to this day: Barrett could have weeks to work on one product, then photographed him, and burned. Basically, the musician wrote the abstract paintings and landscapes. On top of that, the exhibition will feature photographs of the destroyed works, love letters, pictures of the young Barrett and lyrics. Supervisor made a close friend of the artist Stephen Pyle (Stephen Pyle), he helped the family members Barrett.

Sid Barrett always paint only for myself. It is sometimes suggested to do something on the order, but he flatly refused. Musician and artist died in 2006 at age 60. After his death, family members staged a charity auction, which were presented to his work, including nine paintings. Tenders have 121 thousand pounds, which went to support educational programs in the arts.
