Collection bags pushed the whiskey in the ranking of alternative investments

According to the index of Knight Frank, the growth in the average price level segment of women's handbags in the past year exceeded the performance not only of the whiskey market, but the market for fine art

In the world of alternative investments was a small sensation: the annual index growth of luxury goods, Knight Frank (created by analogy with the consumer price index. — AI.) for handbags was 13 %, while for segments whiskey and fine arts, this figure was equal to 5 %, i.e. the market bags (especially Hermes) grew more rapidly than whisky or art-рынок (according to report Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index 2019).

How sustainable this trend is hard to say: last year was the first collectible bags at auctions worldwide sold in quantities that are sufficient for aggregation and inclusion of its results in the overall index. Andrew Shirley, Wealth Report editor and Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, so commented on the situation: "as the objects of other emotional investments, such as rare whiskies, the cost of which has increased dramatically in recent years, handbags are increasingly seen not only as desirable fashion accessories, but also as an investment grade collectibles. Collectors are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for the rarest or most popular bags". And it's not just words: the most expensive bag for today — Hermès Himalaya Birkin 30 cost its new owner for almost $400 thousand, and handbags cost from ten to hundreds of thousands of dollars ceased to be a rarity.

Apparently, the peak of its segment the bags haven't reached in the coming years we will see a positive growth dynamics of its return. And grow there is much more. While bags took first place in the rate of annual growth in individual segment, the leaders in a ten-year retrospective has remained unchanged: in the first place which year stretch is a segment of rare whiskies ( 564 % increase in turnover in 10 years), second place — collectible cars ( 194 %), the third — coins ( 175 %), the fourth — visual arts ( 141 %). Only on the fifth — Hermes bags, the market turnover of which the last 10 years, according to calculations Art Market Research (AMR), has doubled ( 108 %).
