Life and work

the forerunner of the art of non-conformism and one of the brightest and most original representatives of Russian art of XX century, Alexander G. Tyshler, born 14 (26) July 1898 in the city of Melitopol, Taurida governorate, Russian Empire (now Ukraine) to a family of a carpenter. About the craft, passed on from generation to generation, and says his name: the word "Tyshler" in Yiddish means "carpenter".

Growing up surrounded by Russian, Ukrainian and Jewish craftsmen, the eighth, the youngest child in the family, Alexander Tyshler was not able to get closer to art in early childhood: as close as possible to the creative activity of his youth was painting the wheels and sides of the carriage in the company of neighbors-маляров. But this lesson was enough to ensure that the family noticed the penchant for art and crafts, the younger son: in 1912, the elder sister of the artist Tamara brought 14-летнего Alexander in Kiev, where he was determined to study at the local art school and his teachers are A. Frankivsk, N. String Bass, V. Krichevsky, K. Monastyrsky. In 1917, after graduating from College and wanting to continue his studies, Alexander Tyshler began studying at the art Studio "Amazon vanguard" Alexandra Exter. Classes Exter lasted until 1918, but its development has received: in the life of an artist intervened in a Civil war.

In 1919, Alexander Tyshler volunteered into the red army. The service of a young artist took place on the southern front, the detachment of special purpose with a special division 12-й army. Despite the fact that the squad Tischler was among the forces of the offensive, the artist recalled that he personally was fighting was not involved, and "made posters, designed agitation trains, plays". In addition to serving in the army in 1918-1920 Tyshler, under the pseudonym Jean-Джих-Швиль (maiden name of his mother), was an active member of the League of Jewish culture (Kultur-лиге), participated in organized by her 1-й Jewish art exhibition (1920).

After demobilization in 1920, Tyshler returned to Melitopol, where, together with the writer max Polanyi volunteer organized the release of the "rosta Windows", "Max wrote poetry, I painted". For his work on the posters authors are not paid, so I had to make work in a painting workshop: "On large plywood we painted portraits of V. I. Lenin. I learned a very cool to write such portraits. Wrote oil paints... I wrote, to gain masters: they had 3-4 days on the plywood, and I one day have time to write. The demand was high, all the villages bought. And then I oil paint on plywood wrote Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev and Shevchenko ...that I ordered for schools". Such a life with "making soup out of the roach" lasted a year and then Tyshlerfound out that one of his Kiev friends went to live abroad and may assign him an apartment in Moscow. The artist could not miss this chance and in 1921 he moved to Moscow where he studied in VHUTEMAS, the workshop of Vladimir Favorsky. This begins the formation of unique and distinctive artistic language Tischler.

Until 1924 Alexander Tyshler was passionate about figurative art, exploring in his work ideas and artistic techniques of the avant-garde. In 1922, he even became one of the founders of the artists group-проекционистов "Electroorganic", headed by Kliment Redko. At this time Tyshler met e Bagritskim, O. Mandelshtam, V. Inber, V. Mayakovsky, P. Maurice, S. Yesenin and other leading cultural figures with some of them years and decades later, he tied a strong friendship.

In 1925 the direction of the development of the artist has changed – from abstraction, he moved from the figurative easel art and joined the legendary society of artists-станковистов (OST), which participated in many exhibitions until the early 1930-х years. However, by the late 1920-х years it becomes clear that a career as an artist Tischler-станковиста will not be easy: as many authors in his circle, was increasingly accused of formalism.

In 1933 on the works Tischler, exhibited at the jubilee exhibition "Artists of RSFSR for 15 years", the official criticism has responded so: "...He [Tyshler] extremely monotonous. It has two properties: he is the head visionary at-первых, and a fine painter in-вторых. The second he puts at the service first... Tyshler is a kind of sectarian "demolay": he prays to the hole, which no one but himself, sees nothing". In this situation it is quite natural for the withdrawal of the artist from easel art in favor of art, theatre, design.

the Impetus for the development of this sphere of his activity was the familiarity and close friendships with the theatrical and poetic circles in which he entered in the early 1920-х years. So, in mid-1920-х years, among his projects was working on the ABC books in languages that did not have before the revolution of writing, Kalmyk, Mordvin, Tatar, Yiddish; and illustrations to the works of A. Mariengof (1926), Esenin (1927), V. Mayakovsky (1931). He created a series of drawings for the film G. L. Roshal "dawns of Paris" (1937).

since 1927, Tyshler also began to work actively as an artist-оформителя with many theaters of Moscow, Minsk, Kharkov and Leningrad. He worked with the best theater of his time, including Meyerhold and Mikhoels. During his career, Tyshler has designed more than 100 productions, creating almost for each independent series of works.

In 1941, with the outbreak of war, Tyshler, as the chief artist of the State Jewish theater (he held this position until 1949) was evacuated to Tashkent, where he worked in the Uzbek theatres, was engaged in painting, drawing, participated in exhibitions. In 1943, Alexander Tyshler was awarded the title "Honored artist of the Uzbek SSR" for his work on design shows in the Uzbek drama theatre. Hamza. In Tashkent in addition to theater sketches the artist created a series of graphic and pictorial works. Among posed to him was, for example, Anna Akhmatova, wspominaja then that she only knew of two artists who understood poetry: Modigliani and Tischler. In 1946 Tyshler was awarded the Stalin prize for design of the performance "freilekhs" Z. Sneer in GOSET. After the war, and the evacuation Tyshler continued its active cooperation with the leading theaters of Moscow and Leningrad.

Despite the rise of career theatre artist and the universal recognition of his easel paintings and graphics by-прежнему was considered not suitable for exhibiting. In the postwar years, the artist has moved from the expressive, tending to abstraction and carrying echoes of the ideas of the avant-garde things [email protected] ndashх and-х years to a more structured, arranged, compositionally and stylistically rigorous works 1950-х and 1960-х years.

strange but true – the famous image of women with the fantastic designs on the head in the interpretation the author had originally no metaphorical context. Favorite Tyshlera motif, which became the hallmark of his artistic style, was nothing more than a redesigned memory from the distant past Melitopol artist: "I grew up in the South, we're all on the heads wore, everything, literally everything – bagels, cakes, lemonade, so these memories are of great importance... Literariness no, this architectural composition, pure shaped thing... I Have things depicted very realistically, and connect them with a person – fantastic. I love to draw and paint people, especially women. I depict them in unusual relationships and situations outside the laws of perspective. It would seem that less than a house, and in my work a woman can carry on her head a house or a whole city."

In 1950-х and 1960-х years famous female characters Tischler "pace" of the two-dimensional space of paper or canvas and transformed into three-dimensional "Dryads" – a series of carved wooden sculptures on which the artist worked at his dacha in the Moscow region Vereya. In the later period of his life Alexander Tyshler returned to the compositional and narrative findings of his earlier works and often repeat or create the variants found when-то images.

In an interview, Ilya Ehrenburg, answering the question about the artist, gave this characterization of his work: "Tyshler often changed equipment, but not the essence of the form. Whatever he did – scenery for theatre, painting, drawings or sculpture from a tree – it continued the story of cruelty and childishness, of happiness to see the world different than it is seen by stylists, vulgar and bourgeois art. Tyshler talked about his dream beauties, whose head hats, and candles, skvoreshniki, or even samovars and entire cities. The and realistic tale that she can have a tea party in outer space and turn the abduction of the bull Europe in a fun trip. "Winged" everything is possible".

This tale, the artist continued to create until the end of his days. Alexander Grigorievich Tyshler died in Moscow on June 23, 1980.

the First international recognition of Alexander Tischler was held at 16-й the Venice Biennale in 1928 in the framework of the exhibition in the pavilion of the USSR. In 1992 in new-йоркском the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Tischler's work was exhibited in the group project "the Great utopia" (The Great Utopia: the Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde, - garde 1915-1932). Works by Alexander Tischler have 10 repeat sales and a positive average annual growth cost (CAGR) of 10.9%. Notes that subsequent attempts to sell the artist's work, previously acquired in the period 2006-2010 (compared to the "superheated" market of Russian avant-garde), was unsuccessful for the owners. However, the index ARTIMX from ARTinvestment.RU shows positive price momentumworks of the artist in some segments – for example, the average cost of a graphics Tischler increased from 2005 to 2020 to 77%. The average estimate of all sold works by the artist have been exceeded by 157 % – in other words, the sellers received an average amount of 57% more than the initial estimation of the auction house. The upper limit of the estimate is fixed at 33% of sales.

For 10-plus years since the beginning of the revitalization of the Russian avant-garde international exhibition and auction field market of Russian artists of that period have survived and record sales, and scandals, the recognition of foreign critics and collectors, success and disappointment. The wave of interest in art of Russian avant-gardists and modernists by mid-2010-х the market has shifted to socialise, then – contemporary art. Judging by the summer London trading today, the fashion returns to the Russian realistic art, the queue will again be avant-garde. For those who want to take places in a hall in advance, the purchase of works by Alexander Tischler today can be a very affordable entry ticket into the center of the hall.

On the current 341-м AI Auction the sculptural composition "Dryad" 1976.
