Painter, graphic artist

From a merchant family. Initial art education has received in school at the Central school of technical drawing of Baron А. Л. Штиглица. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1886-1891); during the years of study was awarded a small (1887), two large (1888, 1889) silver medals; low ash medal for the composition "Healing of the lame man by the Apostle Peter". In 1891 awarded the title of class artist 1-й degree for the painting "the Holy Empress Alexandra declares himself a Christian."

he Lived in St. Petersburg (Petrograd — Leningrad). Created paintings on historical and genre subjects, portraits, landscapes. Author of painting works: "In the catacombs", "the night prayer", "Thirst for knowledge", "the Eucharist"; series of portraits of members of the Paris commune. In 1913 awarded the title of academician of the Imperial Academy of arts.

In 1895-1909 completed 48 картонов for mosaics of the Church of the Resurrection in St. Petersburg (Church of the Savior-на-Крови), participated in the painting of the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Warsaw (1910).

From 1889 — participant of exhibitions (1-ая Moscow exhibition of sketches). Member of the Society of artists of historical painting (1895-1896); Exhibitor of the Moscow society of art lovers (1892), TPHV (1893-1895), St.-Петербургского society of artists (1899, 1904, 1917), AHRR (1923, 1926). Participated in 7-й the exhibition Department FROM WCVB of the people's Commissariat for education in Moscow (1919).

he Taught at the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts — Petrograd state free art workshops — VKhUTEMAS — Vhuteine in St. Petersburg (Petrograd — Leningrad; from 1913); the head of the mosaic workshop, Professor (1913); the head of the Studio of monumental painting (from 1920), rector (1921).
