From a family of pharmacist. Childhood and youth spent in a Jewish environment in Central Asia. He graduated from the Tashkent men's gymnasium (1906-1914). In 1914 he converted to Orthodoxy.

he Lived in Petrograd (from 1914), Tashkent (from 1918), Moscow (from 1920). He studied at the law faculty of Petrograd University (1915). In the same year, met with И. Е. Репиным and began to frequent in his estate Penates. In September 1916 he was enrolled in the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts on probation; in January 1917 expelled; in September 1917 he entered again; in November of the same year took a sabbatical for health reasons.

Served as an art teacher in Tashkent secondary school (1918-1920); played in the concert troupe of the Syr Darya military Commissariat. In November 1920 he was sent to continue her art education in Moscow and Petrograd. He studied at the Moscow VKhUTEMAS (1920-1923) Д. Н. Кардовского. In 1923 he participated in the last exhibition of the Union of Russian artists.
