Born to a family of artists, the son of the famous sculptor, professor and rector of the IAH FF Shchedrin, a nephew of the landscape Fam. Shchedrin. From 1800 he studied at the IAH in landscape class at the MM Ivanov. In 1809 he was awarded a small silver medal. In 1811 a program "to provide a seaside town, or village in the distance, but in the foreground represent a herd of cattle" was awarded a large gold medal. The following year, released from the Academy of certificate of degree 1 for the title of class artist and the right of a pensioner's travel abroad.

However, for several years trip was postponed due to unfavorable political situation and the wars in Europe, in particular the war of 1812. Only in 1818 Shchedrin was able to use the right pensionerstva and went to Italy. In 1819-1822 he lived in Naples, where he was sent to write views of the city by order of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich. However Batyushkov traveled along the Mediterranean coast. In 1822 he moved to Rome, where he lived do1825. From 1825 he lived and worked in Naples and its environs - Sorrento, Vico, Amalfi, Pozzuoli, on the island of Capri. In 1829, accompanied the Princess EM Golitsyn and Countess EA Vorontsov, on a trip to Switzerland. Participated in academic exhibitions.

Sylvester Shchedrin - an outstanding Russian artist of the first third of the XIX century, one of the founders of the romantic landscape in Russia, largely opened up opportunities for contemporary plein air painting.

In the early works was close to classicism. Since mid-1820's style of paintings the artist has changed. He preferred to work outdoors, to portray "live" full-scale experience. His works are complex colouristic and lighting effects. In a palette dominated by cold, silver, green and blue colors, which replaced the somewhat gloomy color early paintings.

Shchedrin had an impact not only on the development of Russian, and Italian art, especially in the Neapolitan "school Pozilippo».

Artistic Heritage masters, despite the relatively short period of creative activity, is extremely high. Its main part consists of species of Rome, Naples and its environs, everyday scenes. Artist frequently repeated and varied motives of the most successful of his paintings, often capturing the same species at different times of day.

Shchedrin's works are in many museum and private collections, among them State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery and others.
