born in the family chernososhnyh (ie nekrepostnyh) peasants. As a child engaged in carving ivory - a craft that flourished in the Arkhangelsk Province (carvers were also brothers Shubin). In 1759 a wagon train of fish arrived in St. Petersburg, where he continued to work as a carver of bone and nacre. In 1761 with the assistance of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University established by court staff stoker. Having been in this position for three months, in August of that year at the request of Ivan Shuvalov dismissed from the court and enlisted in the IAH. In 1761-1766 he studied in the class of "ornamental" sculpture at N.-F. Gillet, from 1766, consisted of "sculptural-statuynom" class. In 1763 and 1765 was awarded the small and large silver medals. In 1766 for the relief given by the Council IAH program "the murder of Askold and Dir, the princes of Kiev ..." was awarded a large gold medal. In 1767 the Academy issued a certificate of degree 1 for the title of class artist with the right of a pensioner's travel abroad.

In May of that year went to Paris, where he continued his education in the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Was engaged in modeling from life, drawing and copying from plaster. At the same time attended the full-scale class of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1770 he moved to Rome. Every attended classes at the French Academy in Rome. He studied collections of the Vatican, Villa Farnese. After the pensioner's life in April 1772 for some time remained abroad. In 1772-1773 was accompanied NA Demidov on a journey to Italy. In May 1773 he moved to Paris, where traveled to London. In 1773, for "relief from life" awarded Klimentinskoy member of the Academy of Bologna.

In July 1773 he returned to St. Petersburg. In the same year for work performed in Paris, the statue "Young Shepherdess Greek" elected "designated" in academics. In 1774 the marble portrait of Catherine II was awarded the title of academician.

Many worked in the field of decorative sculpture. In 1774-1775 created 58 portraits, medallions of great princes, kings and emperors from Russian Rurik to Elizabeth for the Chesme Palace, in 1775-1782 - the statues and bas-reliefs for the Marble Palace, and in 1786-1789 - twenty-six reliefs and statues of saints for the Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. In 1789, commissioned by G. A Potemkin created a statue of "Catherine II - setter" for the Tauride Palace. In 1780, together with YI Zemelgakom worked on the marble mausoleum P. Golitsyn. Participated in the design of the Grand Cascade of fountains in Peterhof, following the article "Pandorra».

In 1781 became a professor at the University Ekaterinoslav with the right to teach students in St. Petersburg. Approved in 1794 with the rank of professor IAH (non-monetary). In 1795 he was appointed a member of the Academy.

Shubin - a prominent Russian sculptor of the Classical period, created a portrait gallery of the most prominent representatives of the nobility and prominent men of his time: Catherine II, Paul I, MV Lomonosov, I. Shuvalov, Demidova, Potemkin, the Orlov brothers, A. Golitsyn, AN Samoilova, I. Betsky, ZG ; Chernysheva, NV Repnin, PV Zavadovsky. For his work is characterized by the depth and complexity of psychological characteristics in combination with external rigor and idealization of the classic images. Shubin relatively rarely resorted to the bronze, preferring marble, softness allows it to reach the complex painterly effects.
