Zhutovsky studied at the Art school, later he entered the faculty of book graphic art at Moscow Polygraphic Institute (the class of A. Goncharov and I. Chekmazov). In 1956 he graduated from the Institute and then he worked in the Urals and in Sverdlovsk. At that time he was under the influence of the oldest painter and pedagogue D. Arkhangelsky.

In 1957 Boris Zhutovsky returned to Moscow, worked in several Moscow publishing houses as an illustrator and book designer.

From late 1950s till 1962 Zhutovsky attended E. Belyutin’s studio. Since 1959 he began to participate in exhibitions of painting and graphic art in the USSR, later his works were shown in different museums and galleries all over the world.

After participation of the artist in the exhibition 30 years of MOSKh (Moscow Section of the Union of Artists) in the Manezh in December 1962, and after the scandal with N. S. Khrushchev, Zhutovsky had no opportunity to exhibit his works in USSR at all any more.

Since 1964–1965 his works were shown in the galleries and museums all over the world. The works were exposed in Helsinki (Finland); Toronto (Canada); Rome, Florence, Venice, L'Aquila (Italy); Prague, Bratislava, Gdańsk, Sopot, Poznań, Zielona Góra (Poland); Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Bochum (Federal Republic of Germany); Barcelona (Spain); Lugano, Zurich (Switzerland); Paris, Montereau (France); London (Great Britain); Leipzig (German Democratic Republic); New York, Los Angeles (USA) and others.

Since 1979 Zhutovsky participated in the exhibitions of modern art in the exhibition hall at Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street in Moscow. He was also engaged in book design and illustration; he was often awarded for his works in book art. In 1969 the artist joined the Union of Artists of the USSR as a book artist. Zhutovsky participated in many exhibitions of book art in the USSR and abroad.

In 1979 the personal exhibition of Zhutovsky was held in Gdańsk (Poland). Since 1979 more than fifteen personal exhibitions of Zhutovsky were held in different galleries and museums. Boris Zhutovsky exposed his works at many exhibitions in Russia and abroad, including the Exhibition of painting and drawing (the Central house of artist, Moscow; 1990); the Exhibition Other art. Moscow. 1956–76 (the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; 1991); the Exhibition of painting in Irbit State Museum of Fine Arts (Irbit, Sverdlovsk region; 1994); the Exhibition Boris Zhutovsky and Yuri Rost (the gallery Vmeste (“Together”), Moscow; 1994); the Exhibition of the State Prize nominees at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow; 1997 ); the Exhibition of works from the collection of Irbit Museum in Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts (1998); the Exhibition in the Romanov gallery (Moscow; 2005), and many others.

In 1965 Zhutovsky was awarded medals at the Zlata Grona festival in Zielona Góra (Poland) and at the exhibition Alternative Attuale 2 in L'Aquila (Italy). In 1972 he was awarded at the exhibition in the gallery of Joan Miró in Barcelona (Spain).

Works by Boris Zhutovsky are in many museum and private collections in Russia and abroad.
