From a large peasant family. Original art education in the icon workshop in Bogolyubovo, Vladimir province. Participant of First world and Civil wars. Studied at the Kazan architectural-художественных workshops (1919-1920), the Moscow VKhUTEMAS — Vhuteine (1921-1927) А. В. Шевченко. In 1927 on a mission by the people's Commissariat for education sent to improve abroad; visited Germany, France, Italy. In 1929 he returned to the Soviet Union.

he Lived in Moscow (1929-1930, 1933) and Leningrad (1930-1932). He painted portraits, landscapes, genre scenes. Engaged in decorative-оформительским art, book graphics. Was married to the painter Г. А. Курбаковой.

From 1926 — participated in exhibitions (VIII exhibition of AHRR "the Life of the peoples of the USSR" in Moscow). Party of independents (1928). A member and Exhibitor of the society of "GROWTH" (1928-1930), MSH (1940). Works were exhibited at exhibitions: acquisitions of the state Commission for acquisitions of works of fine arts (1928, 1930) in Moscow; "Soviet art of the reconstruction period" (1932), in Leningrad; "Artists of the RSFSR for XV years" (1932-1933) in Leningrad and Moscow; the international exhibition "Art of book" in Paris and Lyon (1931-1932). His personal exhibitions were held in Paris (1927, 1928-1929), Moscow (1929), Leningrad (1931-1932).

he Taught at the painting faculty of the Moscow Vkhutein (1929-1930; associate Professor, head of easel painting Department), the Institute of proletarian fine art in Leningrad (1930-1932), Moscow art College in memory 1905 года (1933) and the Moscow art-промышленном College. М. И. Калинина (1930-е — in the early 1940-х); among students А. Ю. Никич.

Died of tuberculosis.
