he Studied at Tiflis school of painting and sculpture (1910-е) Н. В. Склифосовского.

he Lived in Tiflis (Tbilisi). In his youth he was engaged in book graphics; completed the illustrations for "Salome" О. Уайлда. From 1921 he worked as a designer of dramatic performances, ballets, operas, movies; became close friends with theatre Director Kote Marjanishvili (К. А. Марджанов). In 1923-1943 — chief artist of Drama theatre. Shota Rustaveli in Tbilisi. Issued more than 50 спектаклей: "Mystery-буфф" В. В. Маяковского (1924, not built), "hamlet" (1925) and "Othello" (1937) У. Шекспира; "Anzor" (1928) and "Arsen" (1936) С. И. Шаншиашвили; "the Break" Б. А. Лавренева (1928), "Tetnuld" (1931) and "the spark" (1937) Ш. Н. Дадиани; "the Robbers" Ф. Шиллера (1933), "Man with a gun" Н. Ф. Погодина (1938), "Bogdan Khmelnitsky" А. Е. Корнейчука (1940)"Betrayal" А. И. Сумбатова-Южина (1940), "Bride of billboards" К. Гольдони (1942).

Participated in the design of films at the Tbilisi film Studio: "My grandmother" К. А. Микаберидзе (1929, together with В. В. Сидамон-Эристами), "Arsen" (1937, together with Т. Г. Абакелия) and "Giorgi Saakadze" (1942-1943, together with М. Г. Гоциридзе, Л. С. Мамаладзе, Р. И. Мирзашвили, М. Э. Чиаурели).

was Engaged in easel painting: "the Sower" (1919), "the Stonemasons" (1919), "portrait of the wife (Е. А. Вачнадзе)" (1930-е), "Farmer" (1932), "Industrial landscape" (1933), "Girl with pigeons" (1933).

Since 1923 — participant of the exhibition (the First exhibition of the young artists in Tiflis). A member of a group of experimental artists "H2SO4" was Exhibited: the society of Georgian artists in Tiflis (1924); the Jubilee exhibition of art of the peoples of the USSR (1927), "the Construction and art of the national republics" (1932) in Moscow. Works were exhibited at international exhibitions: the anti-imperialist exhibition in Paris (1931, a division — "Nationalities of the USSR") in new-Йорке (1934).

Honored art worker of the Georgian SSR (1934). Memorial personal exhibitions were held in Moscow (1962). In 1959 в Tbilisi open House-музей И. И. Гамрекели.

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — State Central theatre Museum. А. А. Бахрушина in Moscow, home of the-музей И. И. Гамрекели in Tbilisi and other.
