The Exhibition "Alexander Labas. Echoes of Hiroshima", which opens tomorrow, August 25, includes about 30 works from the artist's family collection

among the works presented, the audience will be able to see a rare series of 23 watercolors, written by Alexander Labas in the period from 1957 to the early 1970-х. Most of them will be exhibited for the first time. These watercolors was written under the impression of the terrible tragedy of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which was destroyed in 1945 by American nuclear bombs, and fortunes of the survivors in those days, but dying from radiation sickness through the years. In 1957, Moscow hosted the world festival of youth and students, which spoke passionately about the victims of those terrible events.

IN a series of watercolors — "in the fire", "Horror of Hiroshima", "Death", "Explosion", "Doomed", etc. — Labas conveyed pain, sorrow and sympathy for the victims of the tragedy. Indifferent and focused on his mission villains, with glazed eyes in an exaggerated glasses, the artist contrasts the mother with a dead child in her arms, people indignant, desperate or pleading for mercy.

the Eyewitness and the participant of defence of Moscow in 1941, the artist was well aware of what bombing from the air. He himself had to put out high explosive bombs falling on the rooftops. In the series "Echoes of Hiroshima" he likens nuclear explosion catastrophe cosmic, universal scale, the Apocalypse, where "the heavens melted in the fire" (A. Akhmatova).

the Series can be divided into three parts: the cockpit-бомбардировщиков, the people subjected to bombing, and the General, deprived of any-либо will take the space where people are dying from the effects of a nuclear attack.

Labas was always very emotional in his works, he was attracted to expressionism. And these watercolors are not documentary evidence, but symbols of a terrible disaster. Like many years ago, the watercolor painting of Alexander Labasa beat the bell of Hiroshima, reminding us, today, that foreign Hiroshima does not happen.
